SELF-PUBLISHING
Our self-publishing process involves an initial meeting where we discuss the vision for your book, our services and costs, and any questions you may have about the publishing process. We then provide you with a final quote and a contract for you to sign before moving ahead with the project.
Design samples for both the cover and the inside text pages are provided electronically once they are completed. After the initial look is approved, we will then lay out your entire book and provide you with a new proof to review.
Once the book’s layout is approved, we will send it to the printer, and you will receive your copies a few weeks later.
The realities of
SELF-PUBLISHING
Self-publishing is often a labour of love. Many of our authors publish a family history book or novel with the intent of either giving the copies away for free to family and friends or selling them at an affordable price. As a result, their publishing costs are often not recuperated.
While we don’t want to discourage you from the book publishing process, we do want to ensure that you understand the realities of self-publishing. According to the Association of Canadian Publishers, roughly 10,000 books are published in Canada alone in any given year. As a result, self-published authors must work hard to ensure that their books stand out in this busy marketplace. We can assist you in the marketing process.
How involved and committed you are to the marketing process will, in part, determine its success in the marketplace. However, we can neither guarantee that your book will sell nor that you will make back the money you invested into the project. Like any entrepreneurial venture, there is a financial risk involved in self-publishing books.
How commissions
WORK
Bookstores charge, on average, a 40% commission for every book that is sold through their locations. Benchmark Press also charges a commission on every sale that we oversee to cover our administrative costs.
On-line retailers, such as Amazon.ca, also charge a commission rate or transaction fee.
If we sell your book solely through our online bookstore, you will receive 90% of the book price.
And, if you sell your book by yourself, you will receive 100% of the profits.
